THE THOUGHTFUL SHOPPING GUIDE
Costco Finds
A good find earns its place in your cart.
Shopping at Costco? Start with what your household will actually use. This guide helps you compare a tempting bulk purchase with the smaller pack you already buy.
Three checks before you buy
1. Compare the same unit
Divide the price by the number of ounces, items or servings. Compare like with like, including quality and size. A larger package is not automatically a better value.
A simple example: a hypothetical 24-pack for $18 costs 75 cents per item. A 12-pack for $8.40 costs 70 cents per item. The smaller pack wins on unit price.
2. Give it a home
Check your pantry, refrigerator or freezer before shopping. For perishable food, decide how much you will use and how you will store the rest. Savings disappear when part of the purchase goes unused.
3. Give it a purpose
Ask: would I buy this without the display or discount? Set a limit for unplanned finds. For a bigger purchase, pause and compare the total price with alternatives before deciding.
Your next-trip checklist
- Check what you already have.
- List the items you need and the quantity you can use.
- Note a comparison price for your regular purchases.
- Leave room in the budget for essentials first.
- Review your receipt and keep the comparisons that helped.
Interesting finds: look beyond the sticker price
A versatile kitchen tool, a refill for something you already own, or a staple you use every week can be more useful than an impulse buy. Judge each find by how often you will use it, what it replaces and its total cost.
